About the Position

Open Road Media, a digital media company with sites that include The Lineup, The Portalist, and Early Bird Books, is looking for a creative, smart, hard-working Associate Editor to join our tight-knit content team.

The Associate Editor will report to the Executive Editor and work across our network of sites. He/She will maintain the integrity of the previously established properties and help cultivate the new sites currently in development. The Associate Editor will pitch, write, and edit stories related to book genres—from sci-fi and mystery fiction to true crime and history—and produce compatible content that engages readers and acquires new fans. 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of a network of innovative content sites that engages an audience that loves reading, is passionate about their favorite genres (true crime, science fiction & fantasy, romance, history, etc.), and encourages users to share, comment, and purchase.
  • Conceptualize, write, and edit stories daily that will grow the audience; work with a content producer to choose the best photographs and images for stories.
  • Work in conjunction with Open Road’s in-house content team and a stable of freelance writers to create high-quality web content.
  • Fact check stories by freelance writers, as needed.
  • Leverage SEO tools, like SEMrush and Moz, to optimize all stories on our sites; conceive and maintain large-scale SEO projects to update archived content.
  • Post on social media accounts like Facebook and Twitter, sharing the posting schedule with other members of the content team.
  • Maintain a publishing calendar and assist in the execution of editorial campaigns.
  • Balance a high volume of tasks while prioritizing the most urgent requests.
  • Use site metrics and sales data to strategize website, newsletter, and social content; generate data reports that will help the team make future content decisions.
  • Maintain editorial partner relationships, communicating with editorial teams from our partner websites and producing syndicated content.
  • Brainstorm ideas for paid partnerships and execute sponsored content, as needed.
  • Work closely with a newsletter team to strategize the best content for our subscriber base.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years editorial/writing experience.
  • Knowledge of genre fiction and entertainment – and how they intersect. Publishing industry and book knowledge is a plus.
  • SEO experience as it relates to both researching new content ideas with insights/trends and tracking success of content.
  • Avid reader and passionate about books is a plus.
  • Impeccably organized with an innate sense of prioritization. High attention to detail, while being specific about facts.
  • Adaptability to working across multiple sites with different audiences and voices.
  • Experience authoring web content.
  • Comfortable working with home-grown content management systems.
  • An original thinker who contributes creative ideas and wants to grow.
  • Familiarity with various social media platforms, especially Facebook.
  • Previous experience with copyediting and / or fact checking.
  • Proficiency in digital asset creation. Familiarity with HTML.
  • Video skills (basic editing and on-camera experience) is a plus.
