About the Position

Open Road is seeking a highly experienced and entrepreneurial Publisher to join its growing organization.  The Publisher will be responsible for managing publishing operations for both the backlist and frontlist catalogue titles with specific focus on growing the e-publishing business. She or he will combine business sense, innovation, creativity and execution leadership to elevate the brand, drive revenue, and grow profitability across multiple channels and platforms. Working in partnership with the EVP-Revenue, the Publisher is responsible for developing business and content strategy with primary focus on growing OR/M’s business and product offerings. She or he will have ownership for execution of the strategy and ensuring success. This role will manage the publishing team of eight and will report directly to the CEO.

The ideal candidate will have experience in B2B publishing sales in both digital and print preferably in a scrappy, start-up environment and/or developing new publishing ventures at larger, more traditional publishing companies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the execution of an acquisition and publishing strategy
  • Oversee and manage the acquisition and renewal of rights with predominate focus on the backlist, as well as more limited on the frontlist, in multiple rights and formats including electronic book form primarily, but also audio and print.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with authors, agents and partner companies; serve as a key business relationship liaison across levels in multiple, diverse organizations.
  • Assist in maximizing print revenue in collaboration with the EVP-Revenue through a) identifying and acquiring print rights with revenue potential, and b) collaborating to find special distribution opportunities with maximum revenue optimization.
  • Oversee and manage the production and editorial team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with content, marketing, finance, data and technology teams in growth and delivery of revenue generation.
  • Develop new business, product and content initiatives.
  • Assess and create responses and actions to industry, market and publishing trends.
  • Work with the technology team to promote improved internal and external systems and products.
  • Represent OR/M at industry events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field; master’s degree preferred.
  • Deep experience in acquiring, managing and publishing content.
  • 10-12 year of experience in publishing across multichannel content creation.
  • Proven track record in cultivating collaborative partnerships and emerging opportunities to drive new revenue streams.

  • Strong experience and relationships with key decision-makers, authors, agents and other industry partners/leaders.
  • B2B publishing sales experience in digital and print with a demonstrable success in consistently meeting or exceeding sales objectives.
  • Must have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office (word, excel, outlook, etc.).
  • Detail oriented, highly-organized and pro-active ideally within high growth and/or early stage companies.
  • Ability to formulate and implement well thought out solutions to day-to-day issues while working towards long-term goals.
  • Must be enthusiastic, high-energy, and professional.
  • Ability to think creatively, highly-driven and self-motivated.
  • Maintain effective communications both internally and externally with strong communication skills – both written and oral.
  • Team player that can thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to roll-up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on management capacity.
  • Experience working in a smaller or start-up environment is a plus.
